Real-Life Pseudoscience-Nonsense in Bonn

I am used to find lots of esoteric, pseudo-scientific nonsense in the web. Unfortunately, these things exist in real life, too: I found a flyer announcing an event on February the 14th (Valentines Day) here in Bonn. In English, the title would be ‘Quantum-Philosophy and Spirituality’. I am indeed interested in the philosophy of quantumphysics, but on a scientific, philosophical basis. I’ve even attended a seminar about this. So I examined the information more closely, knowing that the second part of the title (’Spirituality’) was a warning sign.
And indeed, the flyer’s text claims that Quantumphysics support ancient knowledge of religions. That is wrong in two aspects: religion isn’t about knowledge, it’s about believe. And of cause physics don’t support religious claims. Both things have nothing to do with each other. I assume this will be one of those events where people are told what they would like to hear and thus believe to be true. Especially when there are plenty scientifically-sounding words thrown into the esoteric bucket. Were it not for the 10 Euro fee and the fact that I prefer to spend Valentines Day with my wonderful girlfriend, I would be tempted to go there. But a short web-search of the first ‘lecturer’ seems to be enough to support my bad opinion of this event:
I’m talking about Dr. Ulrich Warnke. He seems to be an somewhat important figure in the pseudo-scientific scene. The German EsoWatch Blog has an long entry about him (in German). There you can find out that he is involved in mental healing, electro-magnetic force-field-therapy devices, healing through scalar waves (which don’t exist) and so on. In my opinion all this can be summed up to: ‘finding synonyms for the placebo effect’.
Furthermore he fights against mobile phones, thinks that the bees die due to electro magnetic radiation (even though the radio waves already existed before the bee-dying of 2006/07) and that people can live without food and water (or with very few of it) because their needed energy comes through the sunlight. Tell this the millions of starving people, they surely would be happy to hear that they don’t need food at all?
All in all, he seems to be focussed on electro-magnetic radiation, which he either damns as evil (mobile phones, bees that die) or accepts as being essential (Inedia / Breatharianism concept: Light instead of food).
On top of all this, he states that our mind can influence matter, that believe stabilizes the reality? The cited passages of his books that I have found on the web simply make no sense to a physicist. But maybe he watched Star Wars too often and believes to be a jedi knight.
What is worst: two days after I found the flyer, I was sitting in the cafeteria when my eyes were suddenly caught by a similar advertisement on a neighbouring table: Our university’s students magazine bAsta, the publication of our students’ union executive committee, included an ad for the same event. Pseudo-science in an students magazine. That really makes me sick. I would have assumed that they are more sceptic with stuff that denies reality. But no, the money (about 50 Euro I assume) seemed to be more important. And probably they didn’t even look up what the ad was all about.

Habe selten so etwas Unverschämtes gelesen. Da hockt jemand zuhause, bei seiner ach so süßen Freundin,
schreibt totalen Unfug zu einem Vortrag, den er nur durch einen Flyer kennt und nicht selbst besucht hat.
Das ist ja wohl der Gipfel der Anmassung und Arroganz.
Leider treiben sich so Wichtigtuer zu genüge im Internet herum. Kein Wunder das es gesellschaftlich bergab geht.

vielen Dank für Ihren Kommentar. Sie sind tatsächlich die erste Person, die nicht mit mir überein stimmt und sich auch die Zeit nimmt, mir dies mitzuteilen. Ich freue mich tatsächlich darüber, denn nur in einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung kann man sich weiter entwickeln.
Allerdings muss ich Ihnen in einigen Ihrer Behauptungen widersprechen.
Zunächst habe ich in meinem Beitrag darauf geachtet, nur spekulativ über diesen Vortrag zu schreiben. Der Text ist bereits am 7.2. entstanden, der Vortrag war erst am 14.2. Da ich, im Gegensatz zu manchen anderen Zeitgenossen, nicht von mir behaupte, Wahrsagen zu können, konnte mein Beitrag nur auf Spekulation beruhen. Ferner handelt es sich bei allem, was ich hier im Blog veröffentliche um meine persönliche Meinung. Der Flyer und die im Internet recherchierten Informationen haben mir zur Bildung ebendieser ausgereicht. Anmaßend und arrogant empfinde ich meine freie Meinungsäußerung daher nicht, ebenso wenig unverschämt. All dies trifft, wenn Sie mich fragen, eher auf “das mit Füßen treten” der modernen wissenschaftlichen Methode zu.
Es schmeichelt mir allerdings, dass Sie mir eine Mitschuld am “Bergab Gehen” der Gesellschaft geben. Denn wenn es sich, wie ich vermute, um die spirituell geprägte, die moderne Rationalität nicht akzeptierende Gesellschaft handelt, die sich noch immer gegen sachliche Argumente wehrt, dann helfe ich ihr vom Berg herab, wo ich kann.
Sollten Sie zufällig beim Vortrag selbst zugegen gewesen sein, so würde ich mich allerdings freuen, wenn Sie mir davon berichten würden. Zu einer skeptischen Einstellung gehört immer auch die Bereitschaft, seine Meinung zu ändern oder modifizieren.
